Flights diverted due to severe weather in Maldives
MET had previously forecast that weather conditions would improve after the 5th of this month.
Several flights departing Male for domestic destinations in the Maldives were forced to return to the capital city on Friday due to adverse weather conditions.
A yellow alert remains in effect for certain regions.
According to flight radar tracking services, a Villa Air flight bound for ADh. Maamigili Friday morning attempted to land at Maamigili Airport but was unable to do so due to poor weather conditions. The aircraft remained airborne for an hour before returning to Male.
Meteorological officials have noted that when severe weather reduces visibility, aircraft typically remain in a holding pattern until conditions improve. If visibility does not improve, flights are diverted to the nearest available airport.
Heavy rainfall has affected many parts of the country, coinciding with the New Year holidays. The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for areas from Kaafu Atoll to Thaa Atoll, warning of heavy rain, strong winds reaching up to 45 mph, and rough seas. The alert is expected to remain in effect until 3 pm Friday.
