Temporary shelter for 44 displaced by Male flooding
This is the second significant flooding event in Male in recent weeks.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday provided temporary shelter and food to 44 people from seven households affected by flooding in Male.
According to the NDMA, the displaced individuals were offered assistance for one day following heavy rains that caused waterlogging across the city Saturday morning. The Maldives Meteorological Service reported 130 millimetres of rainfall in Male during this period.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has deployed pumps to drain floodwater from affected areas. Over 18,000 tonnes of water have been removed from the city so far.
The MET office has forecast showery weather, including heavy rain and thundershowers, in the northern and central parts of the country until 6 pm Saturday.
This is the second significant flooding event in Male in recent weeks. Heavy rains last weekend caused damage to homes and properties, requiring the release of 30,000 tonnes of water from the city. The NDMA stated that MVR 3 million was spent on relief efforts for those affected by last week’s flooding.
