MNDF prepares for heavy rainfall, stormy weather
The public is encouraged to contact the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) via hotline number 115 for assistance during the storm.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across most parts of the country starting Monday. The unsettled weather is expected to continue over the next several days, with windy conditions from Wednesday through Friday, and rough seas in coastal areas. The rainfall is expected to ease after Saturday, providing some relief.
As the nation braces for the monsoon, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has activated its 'Joint Operations Centre' to ensure that adequate preparations are in place to mitigate the effects of the severe weather. A number of precautionary measures have been implemented across the country’s four area commands: Male’ region, Central Region, South Region, and North Region.
The MNDF has outlined several key actions to minimize the impact of flooding and storm-related disruptions. These measures include:
-
1-
Installation of FRS Pumps: The MNDF will deploy Flood Relief Pumps (FRS) in areas affected by water accumulation to quickly drain floodwaters and reduce the risk of flooding.
-
2-
Additional Drainage Work: Efforts will be made to improve drainage in areas with persistent waterlogging. The MNDF is working to ensure that drainage systems are functioning effectively to prevent further flooding.
-
3-
Male’ Area Command Response: The Male’ Area Command is on high alert to respond to any flooding events in islands under its jurisdiction. They are prepared to assist in managing water levels in the capital and nearby islands.
-
4-
Sandbag Distribution: To protect vulnerable areas from water surges, the MNDF is preparing to distribute sandbags in Male’. Sandbags will be placed in locations, including (260 sandbags near Salman Mosque, 200 sandbags at Kudakudhinge Bageecha, 200 sandbags at the Social Center area; Additional teams will be deployed to distribute sandbags depending on the severity of the weather).
-
5-
Deployment of Response Teams: The MNDF will deploy two teams to assist in sandbag distribution and flood mitigation. These teams will be supplemented with additional units as required, based on assessments of the situation.
-
6-
Collaboration with Local Councils: The MNDF is working closely with local councils in the Central, Southern, and Northern Maldives to address any flooding issues. Coordination with these councils will ensure that resources are mobilized quickly and efficiently where they are most needed.
-
7-
Ongoing Monitoring of Island Conditions: The MNDF will closely monitor the situation across the islands. High-risk areas will be identified, and targeted assistance will be provided to ensure that the most affected islands receive the necessary support.
