The President has officially approved two new nominees for appointment to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), following the resignation of two previous members last November. Vice-President Abdul Salaam and Member Thoha Mohamed stepped down as the Parliament prepared for a no-confidence vote, leaving the positions vacant.

In a significant development, the President submitted the names of the new nominees during an extraordinary session held last Thursday. However, a change was made in one of the originally proposed names, which was later clarified in a letter read out in today's session.

The two individuals nominated for appointment to the ACC are:

  • Ahmed Naashid, Ma. Golden Moon

  • Abdullah Naashid, Fasana, R. Alifushi

These nominations were carefully reviewed and assessed by the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament, which held three meetings today to deliberate on the candidates. The committee invited public input for about 45 minutes this morning, allowing citizens to voice any concerns or objections about the two nominees.

After thorough consideration, the committee approved the nominations, and the names were subsequently presented for approval in the Parliament. The nominees received unanimous support, with 68 members present during the evening session voting in favor of the appointments.

While Abdullah Naashid was ultimately chosen for the position, it is worth noting that the President had originally proposed Asiya Azeema, Rozevilla, R. Hulhudhuhfaaru, as one of the candidates. Abdullah Naashid, ranked 19th on a list of 26 applicants, was later substituted for Azeema, though the reasons behind this last-minute change remain unclear.

In addition to these appointments, the President had previously submitted a list of other applicants for the positions, which included a wide range of candidates. However, the list and the letter containing the President’s earlier nominations have now been removed from the Parliament's official website, sparking further questions about the changes.

With the approval of these two new members, the Anti-Corruption Commission is set to continue its critical work in combating corruption and promoting transparency within the government. The swift and unanimous approval by the Parliament underscores the confidence in the selected individuals to carry out the ACC's mandate effectively.
