MTCC awarded contract to operate govt's EV taxi line
The EV taxi line is a 24-hour service designed to integrate with the RTL bus system operated by MTCC.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to operate the government's environmentally friendly electric vehicle (EV) taxi service.
The EV taxi line is a 24-hour service designed to integrate with the RTL bus system operated by MTCC. The government had decided to entrust the operation of the service to a state-owned company.
A signing ceremony was held Wednesday at Meeruma Hall, where the agreement was signed by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee on behalf of the company and Director General Ahmed Shameem on behalf of the Ministry of Transport.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen highlighted the challenges in accessing taxi services in Male, attributing them to the lack of a monitoring system. He stated that the government’s objective in launching the service was to strengthen taxi services rather than engage in the business itself.
According to Ameen:
-
The service will be operated through software developed by MTCC.
-
Passengers will be assigned taxis through the system rather than drivers choosing destinations.
-
Taxis will be available within a minute of a request.
He also noted that while taxi services operate globally, the government has chosen to implement the system in an environmentally friendly manner.
MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee expressed appreciation for the government’s trust in the company and stated that MTCC would work to ensure the smooth operation of the service.
He added that:
-
MTCC’s team will manage the service at all times.
-
Part-time employees will be paid weekly or biweekly.
-
Taxi drivers will be recruited from a pool established by the company.
