A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attack temporarily disrupted the online token issuance system of STELCO's mobile application as it facilitated the distribution of canned tuna cases for Ramadan.

The attack occurred as the online system went live for users to obtain tokens required for collecting this year’s government-issued canned tuna cases.

A DDOS attack is a malicious cyber attempt designed to overwhelm a targeted application, rendering it temporarily inoperative. According to STELCO, the attack originated from foreign sources, resulting in a brief suspension of the application.

However, the company has mitigated the attack, and services have since been restored.

The government has initiated the distribution of free canned tuna cases to every household in preparation for Ramadan. Under the distribution policy, individuals are eligible to receive up to three canned tuna cases, with each case corresponding to an electricity meter. One person can present up to three electricity metres and receive one case per metre, with a maximum limit of three meters per person.

The introduction of online token issuance aimed to address public concerns over long queues at distribution centres. Collection points experienced overcrowding and long wait times, leading to widespread criticism.
