The government will commence work on asphalting the outer road leading to the official jetty in Male after Ramadan, with completion expected by the end of the year, President Mohamed Muizzu announced Thursday.

The president made the remarks at a ceremony held to mark the redevelopment and reopening of the official jetty.

President Muizzu stated that the project has been handed over to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which will begin development work following Ramadan.

According to the president, the project includes:

  • Development of the road from the MTCC Hulhumale ferry terminal to the local market

  • Widening of the road to two lanes at each end, requiring reclamation and sheet piling

  • Completion of all necessary infrastructure beneath the road

“The work of tarring, developing, and upgrading this road is expected to start after Ramadan and be completed by the end of this year,” President Muizzu said.

He further stated that:

  • This section of the outer road is not part of the Chinese-funded road development project in Male and Vilimale

  • The project will be financed through the government budget

  • The Chinese-funded road construction project is set to begin this year

  • The government has also undertaken the redevelopment of Sultan Park near the official jetty
