A human foot was found while cleaning M. Nirufehi, where a fire had taken the lives of 10 people last week.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that a person's foot was found while cleaning the house and clearing the charred debris. The police, however, did not elaborate on the issue.

On Friday, the planning ministry began cleaning and demolishing the building, which was badly burnt in the fire.

The police said on Monday that the house cleaning is overseen by the police. They also said that they will find more to the investigation during the cleaning process.

The fire broke out in the house, located in the juncture between Iskandhar Magu and Koarukendi Magu, when an illegal garage under the labour quarter caught fire suddenly. At least 10 foreign nationals working in the Maldives were killed in the incident. The 12 rooms, made of wood on two floors with a deck on top of the garage, were entirely occupied by foreigners.

The victims were as follows:

  • Eight Indians - five men and three women

  • Two Bangladeshis - a woman and a man

A critically injured patient is being treated on ventilator support at IGMH and his condition is still critical, a hospital spokesman told Atoll Times on Monday.

In response to one of the deadliest fires in the history of Maldives, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is providing temporary shelter to 18 locals and 15 foreigners.

At a press conference on Monday, the police said that since the investigation was still going on, they could not specify the cause of the fire yet.

The police are working to send the bodies of those who died in the fire back to their nations,  at the request of their families. Atoll Times has ascertained on Monday that three bodies have been sent back to their respective countries so far.
