SOEs awarded contracts for waste management centres in 75 Islands

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has signed agreements with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Regional Airports Company Limited (RDC), and Fenaka Corporation for the construction of waste management centres in 75 islands under the Magey Saafu Raajje programme.
According to the ministry, four companies have been contracted to establish waste management systems in 109 islands, with agreements for 75 islands signed on Saturday. The ministry stated that waste management systems are already in place in other areas.
The ministry expects a comprehensive waste management system to be established in all inhabited islands of the Maldives by the last quarter of this year.
In the presidential statement earlier this year, President Mohamed Muizzu pledged to implement a nationwide waste management system by the end of the year.
Last week, the Waste Management Corporation (WMCO) was awarded a contract to construct waste management centres in 34 islands.
The ministry also plans to provide garbage disposal equipment and waste collection vehicles to islands that currently lack such resources within the year.
