Tourist hotels and resorts can screen FIFA World Cup matches only after subscribing to a package specially introduced for the purpose, the exclusive local broadcaster for FIFA World Cup 2022 said Wednesday.

With the package, resorts will have to pay $4,000-5,500 on average to MediaNet to screen the World Cup, which kicks off in Qatar on Sunday.

MediaNet bought the rights to show the World Cup in the Maldives. The cable TV operator has announced that it will be airing the World Cup on its own channel, Ice Network, as well as Raajje TV and PSM's Yes TV.

MediaNet on Wednesday announced a special package to screen the World Cup in resorts and hotels.

  • Broadcasting Commission has already approved the package

  • Under the package, hotels and resorts will have to pay a fee at the rate of $1 per room per match, based on an average occupancy of 65-75%

This is the high season of tourism in the Maldives, and according to tourism ministry figures, the occupancy of resorts in the Maldives during this period averages between 65-70%.

  • 64 matches to be played in this year's World Cup

  • If the occupancy of a 100-room resort is at 65%, $4,160 (MVR 64,064) will have to paid to MediaNet to screen the World Cup matches

Although MediaNet has signed up with Raajje TV and Yes TV to air the World Cup, the two channels will be able to air matches only at residential places. Matches can only be shown in commercial and public places through MediaNet's Ice Plus channel.
