MNDF searches for missing crew member after cargo vessel sinks

The vessel caught fire at 9:07 pm, and one person, identified as Ali Mushfiq Mohamed Shareef, 25, remains missing.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has confirmed that the cargo vessel Holhudhoo Boat, which caught fire Wednesday night, sank Thursday morning.

A search operation is underway for a missing crew member.

The vessel caught fire at 9:07 pm, and one person, identified as Ali Mushfiq Mohamed Shareef, 25, remains missing. According to the MNDF, the ship sank at 2:07 am.

Authorities have advised vessels in the area to exercise caution due to floating debris. Special precautions have been recommended for those travelling at night.

The MNDF Central Area Command Coast Guard is leading the search for the missing crew member, using drones as part of the operation.

According to the MNDF:

  • There were 18 people on board, including the captain.

  • 17 people have been rescued.

  • One person remains missing.

Th. Kandoodhoo Council President Ahmed Reehan told Atoll Times Wednesday night that the vessel caught fire after leaving Th. Hirilandhoo to capital Male. It had previously docked at Th. Kandoodhoo before making its way to Hirilandhoo.

Further details on the cargo on board have not yet been confirmed. Authorities are continuing search and firefighting efforts.
