STELCO urges to limit electricity use amid rising consumption
Fahmy called on the public to contribute to reducing electricity consumption both for individual benefit and broader social welfare.
Managing Director of the State Electric Company (STELCO), Hussain Fahmy, has urged the public to exercise caution in electricity usage as electricity consumption and perceived temperature continue to rise in the Malé region.
In a post shared on X on Saturday, Fahmy stated that electricity consumption had increased significantly on Thursday and again on Friday.
According to Fahmy:
-
The highest electricity consumption recorded so far this year was on Thursday.
-
Approximately 114 megawatts (MW) of electricity were used around 3:00 p.m. on that day.
-
At 1:00 a.m. on Friday, the city’s load remained high at 111 MW.
Fahmy called on the public to contribute to reducing electricity consumption both for individual benefit and broader social welfare. He also noted that rising temperatures were a contributing factor to the increased electricity usage.
In his appeal, Fahmy recommended:
-
Setting air conditioning units to no lower than 25 degrees Celsius.
-
Avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances.
STELCO has been publishing regular updates on electricity consumption levels in Malé. Electricity usage has been on the rise since the end of Ramadan, with recent average peak consumption exceeding 100 MW, compared to lower levels prior to the fasting period.
