The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that a complaint was filed by the Children’s Ombudsperson’s Office against opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) officials regarding comments made about the son of President Mohamed Muizzu.

The complaint, lodged by Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeg, concerns remarks allegedly made during an MDP-led protest relating to the use of vape products by the President's son. According to police, senior MDP activist Mariyam Zubair and other MDP members are under investigation for alleged defamation in relation to the matter.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Zubair and MDP National Assembly member Ahmed Saleem were summoned to the police station under a Criminal Court order. The order directed the collection of external photographs—excluding genital areas—and voice samples from both individuals.

The police stated that such procedures fall within standard investigative practices when identifying individuals for the purpose of comparison with images or audio recordings linked to an investigation.

Meanwhile, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has filed civil defamation suits against individuals over the same remarks concerning their son. In a statement, Sajidha’s legal representatives noted on Sunday that the civil action is separate from the ongoing criminal investigation.

The police reiterated that investigations are continuing in accordance with the court's directives and existing legal procedures.
