President defends acquisition of military vehicles amid criticism
The new armoured vehicles, suitable for road operations and varied terrain, were showcased during a parade held two days ago.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday addressed public criticism over the recent procurement of armoured vehicles for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), stating that strengthening the military is a national responsibility.
The new armoured vehicles, suitable for road operations and varied terrain, were showcased during a parade held two days ago as part of the MNDF Anniversary celebrations. The acquisition has been met with criticism from some who questioned the expenditure in light of the country's economic conditions.
Speaking at the army’s anniversary gathering Monday evening, President Muizzu said it is the duty of the state to ensure that the armed forces are provided with the resources and training necessary to carry out their responsibilities.
He stated that the previous condition of the MNDF’s ground transport fleet was poor, with some vehicles severely damaged. He added that the procurement of the new vehicles was part of a broader effort to address those issues.
“This is not something we should be ashamed of,” said President Muizzu, addressing the criticisms. “If you are ashamed of providing supplies to the army, you have to ask yourself where your patriotism lies.”
He further stated that efforts to strengthen the country’s defence forces should be carried out with confidence and that it is a matter of national security, freedom and sovereignty.
Referring to those who ridiculed the acquisition, the President described such individuals as lacking patriotism and acting with political motivations. He maintained that the government would continue with its efforts to strengthen all branches of the armed forces.
President Muizzu also outlined his long-term vision to develop the MNDF into a more comprehensive defence force that includes an air force, navy, and ground army.
