Maldives to seek re-election to UN Security Council
Maldives had contested for a seat in the Security Council in 2018 under former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that the Maldives will contest for the United Nations Security Council and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The ministry said in a statement that the Maldives has decided to contest:

For UN Security Council, 2033-2034

For UN ECOSOC, 2027-2029
Maldives had contested for a seat in the Security Council in 2018 under former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. However, the Maldives got only 46 votes of the 193 countries that participated in the vote, against Indonesia.
The decision to apply for the Security Council and ECOSOC was taken with an aim to ensure a bright future for the country, according to the foreign ministry.
