Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has launched an internal investigation into the death of an 8-month-old child who died while receiving treatment after being admitted to the hospital’s emergency room on 18 June 2025.

The child was brought to IGMH with symptoms of coughing and vomiting. The family of the child has alleged that the baby died while under hospital care and raised concerns regarding the treatment provided.

In a statement, IGMH confirmed the child was being treated at the hospital and expressed regret over the incident. The hospital stated that the infant’s condition was monitored daily by a team of doctors, including paediatricians who visited the child in the ward throughout the hospital stay.

According to the hospital, the medical team carried out all necessary tests, adjusted treatment plans when required, and administered appropriate care based on the child’s condition at the time. The statement also noted that intensive care unit (ICU) admission is arranged based on medical recommendation and subject to availability of beds. If ICU space is unavailable, patients may be transferred to other facilities.

The statement acknowledged that certain infections or medical complications, particularly in infants, can become severe suddenly and may be difficult to detect in the early stages.

IGMH stated that it conducts internal reviews in cases involving patient deaths and that this case is currently under investigation. The hospital added that it is committed to identifying areas for improvement to enhance patient care and the experiences of families.
