The government has revised the requirement for beneficiaries under the previous administration’s Binveriya scheme to forfeit land owned by their spouses in order to qualify for land allocation.

Previously, the Ministry of Housing had stated that individuals allocated flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme would need to relinquish land held either in their own name or in the name of their spouse.

However, in a gazette notice issued on Saturday evening, the ministry announced a change in this requirement. The notice cited public concern and the ongoing development of Phase 3 of Hulhumalé and the Giraavaru Falhu lagoon as reasons for the revision.

According to the ministry, as the construction and settlement of reclaimed lands will take additional time, the earlier notification will no longer be applicable.

The ministry further clarified that no letters of ineligibility have been issued to any recipients who have received flat numbers or been allocated flats under the list made public in November 2023.
