President Mohamed Muizzu has called for unity among the people of the Maldives, stating that collective determination is key to achieving further development.
He made these remarks at the official opening ceremony of the new terminal (T1) at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Saturday evening.
The President said the new terminal marks a step forward in supporting tourism and strengthening the country’s economy. He noted that economic independence is necessary to uphold national sovereignty and said this was one of the reasons for opening the terminal on Independence Day.
President Muizzu said the people of the Maldives have a history they can be proud of, and that national interest must be prioritised.
“We should put the country above our own interests, our personal ambitions and everything we have. We should put the country first, all unite and sing the same thing, the same song. We should speak the same language, the same tone, the same voice,” he said.
He added that ensuring progress and stability for future generations is a shared duty.
“It is the responsibility of each of us. It is a fact that none of us can escape,” he said.
President Muizzu also said that if people moved forward together, more progress could be made in infrastructure, mindset, and environmental development.
“The country will develop in terms of buildings and meaning. Our minds will develop. The development of the environment will be achieved easily. The development of the mind and the development of the structure will be achieved together,” he said.
He stated that the new terminal at VIA would advance the Maldives in several areas.
President Muizzu also acknowledged the efforts of former Presidents Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the development of the terminal.
The ceremony was held at the new T1 terminal building at VIA.
