Maldives and Sri Lanka exchanged two agreements on Monday to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at the President’s Office in Malé during the state visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maldives. The visit marks President Anura’s first to the Maldives since assuming office in September.
The agreements followed official talks between the two governments focused on strengthening bilateral relations.

Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Training and Information Exchange: An MoU was signed between the Bandaranaike International Institute of Diplomatic Studies of Sri Lanka and the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM). The agreement facilitates training programmes and information exchange between the two institutions. FOSIM was established as part of the current Maldivian administration’s efforts to strengthen the country’s foreign service capabilities.

Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters: A treaty was signed to enable both countries to provide assistance in criminal matters, in line with their respective national laws and the provisions of the agreement. The treaty includes cooperation on investigations, prosecutions, and post-trial proceedings. Matters submitted under the treaty will be handled by a designated central authority in each country, with the Prosecutor General’s Office acting as the central authority for the Maldives.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Maldives and Sri Lanka. Formal ties were established on 26 July, the date of Maldives' Independence Day.
