Mohamed Ibrahim, who was arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Moosa Ibrahim in L. Maavah on Monday, has been remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial.
The victim, Moosa Ibrahim, 29, of Nalahiya, Maavah, was killed during an altercation on Monday morning. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Mohamed Ibrahim, 29, of Asri Manzil, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, was arrested the same day. According to Maldives Police Service, he was brought before the island magistrate court on Tuesday, where he was remanded in police custody until the end of the trial.
Police confirmed that Mohamed Ibrahim has a prior record related to drugs.
As part of the investigation, police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the incident. It was found in the sea.
Moosa Ibrahim’s body was transported to Malé for further forensic examination required for the investigation.
A resident told Atoll Times that the altercation occurred between two individuals in the morning. Police confirmed this account, stating that Moosa Ibrahim was stabbed in the neck during the fight.
Another local resident said that both individuals were known to have been previously involved in criminal activity. Mohamed Ibrahim had resided in Maavah after marrying a local resident. Although they are now divorced, he is known to visit the island occasionally.
There are unverified claims circulating in the island community suggesting that the dispute may have been drug-related. Police have not confirmed this.
