The Human Rights and Gender Committee of Parliament has rejected the nomination of Mohamed Farish Thoha for one of the two vacant positions on the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), citing allegations raised against him.
President Mohamed Muizzu had forwarded the names of Farish and Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood to Parliament to fill two of the five commission seats due to expire on 8 September.
The committee interviewed both candidates on Saturday. During the session, Dhandhoo MP Mohamed Fazeel questioned Farish about complaints of domestic violence reportedly received against him. Farish denied being arrested or summoned to any authority in relation to such allegations.
“I have not been arrested for any domestic violence case and no agency has summoned me,” Farish said.
Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau also asked whether Farish’s resignation from the armed forces was connected to misconduct. Farish responded that rumours of domestic violence emerged only years after his marriage ended. He said his then-wife had denied the claims.
“When I asked her, she said I did not harm her. I did not harm her,” he stated.
Committee members noted that Farish appeared unprepared for the interview and was unfamiliar with recent human rights legislation.
