A man previously arrested for posing as an immigration officer to commit robbery has been taken into custody again, this time for stealing chocolates from a shop.
Mohamed Naveen, 45, of G. Beruga, Malé, was arrested in September in connection with the robbery of a foreign resident. In that case, a Bangladeshi man reported the theft of a mobile phone and MVR 9,000.
Police confirmed that Naveen was arrested again on Friday after the shoplifting incident. The Criminal Court ruled that there was sufficient evidence to keep him in custody and ordered a 15-day remand.
When presented in court, Naveen stated that he had not intended to avoid payment for the chocolates but had gone outside to seek money from another person. He told the court he did not require a lawyer.
According to court records, Naveen has an extensive history of arrests and detentions for theft.
