More than 90 people have been arrested so far in a nationwide drug operation conducted by police on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen said. He added that the number is expected to rise.
The operation, named Operation Alimagu, was launched on Thursday morning and involves multiple police departments operating across five regions, with more than 500 officers deployed. President Mohamed Muizzu has said the operation is being carried out on his instruction.
Commissioner Naveen shared the latest updates during an interview with PSM News on Thursday afternoon.
“More than 100 locations are scheduled to be searched in this operation. At present, the live update lists 90 arrests. More people are likely to be arrested,” he said, referring to figures recorded since Wednesday night.
According to Naveen:
-
Over 100 premises will be searched, and the number may increase.
-
Drugs, cash, equipment used in drug distribution and other criminal items have been found during the searches.
“This is the first time such a large-scale anti-drug operation has been conducted nationwide. We can learn a lot from this. The operation will not end today,” he said.
Naveen added that the operation is targeting islands where major drug dealers are based and will expand to other islands in the coming days.
