Historic independence seats returned to Maldives
The items were formally handed over by the British High Commissioner to Maldives, Nicholas David Low, at the Foreign Ministry.

The seats used to sign the Treaty of Independence with the British, which marked Maldives’ release from British protection 52 years ago, were handed over to the Maldivian government on Monday.
A ceremony took place at the Foreign Ministry to return the seats used during the signing of the Treaty of Independence on 26 July. The items were formally handed over by the British High Commissioner to Maldives, Nicholas David Low.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel received the seats on behalf of the government of Maldives. Heritage Minister Adam Naseer was also present. Senior officials from the Foreign Ministry and the British High Commission attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Khaleel said the seats represented Maldives’ first step as an independent country. He noted that the handover reflected the long-standing relationship between Maldives and the United Kingdom.
The British High Commissioner stated that the United Kingdom would continue efforts to strengthen its ties with Maldives.
