Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq has announced that he will seek a second term in office in the local council elections scheduled for 28 March.

Ismail confirmed his candidacy in a post on Facebook, stating that he decided to run again to complete ongoing work and continue planned initiatives in Fuvahmulah.

He wrote that several projects for the benefit of residents had been carried out during his tenure, with some still underway and new programmes being prepared. The decision to pursue a second term, he said, was to ensure continuity in the city’s development.

“I have not finished what I want to achieve for the development of this city. I want to continue to strengthen what has been started, begin and progress what is planned, and further strengthen administrative management,” he said.

Ismail added that serving as mayor had been the greatest honour of his life. In his announcement, he outlined key work carried out by the council over the past four years. These include:

  • Implementing programmes to support small and home-based businesses, launching a microfinance scheme, providing grant aid, and expanding opportunities to advertise and sell island products

  • Launching the Discover Fuvahmulah website and representing the island at international fairs

  • Conducting programmes to increase religious awareness and encourage children to pray

  • Prioritising the maintenance of mosques

  • Developing sports facilities, organising tournaments, and facilitating sports activities; establishing parks, swimming areas and recreational spaces; and hosting festivals and carnivals

  • Strengthening administrative management, providing staff training, upgrading residential services, improving online communication tools, and establishing a customer front office

  • Forming partnerships with foreign organisations to seek assistance for areas such as waste management, medical equipment for hospitals and computer systems for schools

Ismail said the council has worked closely with the government to support the development of the island. He also invited residents to share their expectations for the city’s future.
