Police confirmed on Sunday that a case has been filed alleging that Sunny Umar, who operates a travel agency under the Maldives Halal Travel brand and manages hospitality-related media outlets, sexually assaulted a child.
Police said the complaint was lodged by family members early on Saturday. The case is now under investigation.
Sunny Umar left the country on Saturday, travelling to New Delhi, after allegations emerged that he had sexually assaulted children from his wife’s family.
On Saturday, police stated that no such case had been filed at the time. However, police confirmed on Sunday that the complaint had since been registered and that inquiries were underway. When asked about his current whereabouts, police declined to provide further information.
According to police, the allegations involve the sexual assault of three children from Umar’s wife’s family. The alleged victims include two girls and one boy. One of the girls and the boy are under the age of 18, and police said the other girl was also assaulted before she turned 18.
The investigation is ongoing.
