Faafu Atoll Education Centre has received an award from the United Arab Emirates with prize money of USD 150,000 for a project related to sustainability.

The award was granted under the Zayed Sustainability Prize, which is presented annually in memory of the UAE’s founding president Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The prize recognises initiatives in clean energy, water, food, health and education. In previous years, the award has been won by Addu High School and Hiraa School.

Faafu Atoll Education Centre secured the award after submitting a proposal to convert the entire school to renewable energy. The project involves installing solar panels across the school to meet its electricity needs.

The award was presented at a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi to mark the opening of Zayed Sustainability Week. The event was attended by representatives from F. Nilandhoo, where the school is located, and Abdulla Khaleel, who is from the same island.

In an earlier interview, the school’s principal Abdulla Ahmed said the Ministry of Education currently spends more than MVR 100,000 per month on electricity for the school. He said converting the school to solar power would reduce this expenditure. He also noted that excess electricity generated could be supplied to the Fenaka Corporation grid, allowing the school to generate income.
