The government will begin distributing canned tuna to households in Male region on Saturday as part of its annual Ramadan assistance programme.

According to the official calendar, the month of Ramadan is expected to begin on 18 February.

Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Local Government on Thursday, Minister Adam Shareef said that, as in the previous two years, each household will receive one case containing 48 cans of tuna.

He said the process to obtain tokens for collection in the Malé area opened on Thursday. The token number must be obtained through a portal introduced by the police.

The minister said distribution in the Malé area will be completed by 11 February.

He said 15 distribution centres will be set up in the Malé area, including eight in Malé, one in Vilimalé and six in Hulhumalé.

In Malé, the centres will be located at:

  • MIFCO Centre

  • Social Centre

  • MTCC Sawmill

  • Henveiru Grounds

  • Four centres at Galolhu Stadium

In Hulhumalé Phase 1, centres will be located at:

  • Umar Zahir Building

  • POLCO Tower

  • Mohamed Gasim Pre-School

In Hulhumalé Phase 2, centres will be located at:

  • Kamil Didi School

  • Hiyaa Tower 10

  • Vinares Flats

In Vilimalé, distribution will take place at the WAMCO site.

Adam Shareef said that in the atolls, each Maldivian family that cooks and eats separately will be considered a household. In the Malé area, each domestic electricity meter will be treated as a separate household.

He said the ministry has identified a total of 118,673 households eligible for the distribution. Of these, 56,918 are in the atolls and 61,755 are domestic meters in the Malé area.

The minister said the State Trading Organisation will transport the canned tuna to the atolls and island councils will carry out the distribution in their respective islands.
