President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday called on citizens to begin reform by setting personal examples, in his message to mark the start of Ramadan, which begins in the Maldives on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has declared Wednesday as the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

In his message, the President said that anyone seeking reform or positive change in the family, society or the country must first demonstrate that change in their own conduct. He said that personal action can influence families, communities and the wider society.

The President noted that Ramadan is a period in which the public expects progress in areas including religious practice, customs, laws and regulations. He outlined several principles he said should be reflected in society, including regular prayer, protection of children’s dignity, respect for elders, rejection of drug use and other harmful habits, and adherence to Islamic principles in daily life.

He said Ramadan teaches discipline, respect for time through worship, and engagement in good deeds. The President added that the month also reinforces lessons related to moral conduct, distinguishing between right and wrong, and commitment to the wider Islamic community.

He also referred to family and community gatherings during Ramadan as opportunities to strengthen social ties.

The President urged citizens to use the month to focus on personal conduct in line with religious and national principles, with the aim of contributing to change in the country.
