The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced that Wednesday will mark the first day of the holy month of Ramadan for the year 1447 AH in the Maldives.
The announcement followed a meeting held at the Islamic Centre on Tuesday evening to determine the start of the fasting month.
In an official statement signed by Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the ministry said the moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 1447 AH was sighted in several Islamic countries after sunset on Tuesday, the 29th day of Shaaban.
In accordance with the regulations applied in the Maldives for determining the beginning of Ramadan and Shawwal, Wednesday, 18 February, has therefore been declared as the first day of Ramadan.
In the statement, the minister called on Maldivian citizens to observe the fasting obligations and encouraged the performance of religious duties during the month.
