Police commissioner application deadline extended after no applicants
Naveen was appointed on June 10, 2025 and resigned eight months later.
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has extended the application deadline for the post of Commissioner of Police after no candidates applied within the initial period.
The ministry re-announced the vacancy following the lapse of the original deadline, which was set for 2:00 p.m. yesterday. A new deadline has been set for 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The extension was announced shortly before the initial deadline expired.
The position became vacant after the resignation and retirement of Ismail Naveen on February 18. He had served as Commissioner of Police for eight months.
The ministry first opened applications for the post on the 5th of this month.
Since the current administration assumed office, two Commissioners of Police have resigned. Ali Shujau, appointed on December 25, 2023, resigned on April 26, 2025. Naveen was appointed on June 10, 2025 and resigned eight months later.
Both officials cited personal reasons for their resignations.
Former Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has previously stated that frequent changes in leadership affect public confidence in the police service.
The Maldives Police Service is currently being managed on an interim basis by Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikury.
