EC says officials won't influence voters in upcoming polls
The statement was issued in response to claims circulated on social media alleging that the Commission’s actions may compromise the secrecy of the vote.
The Elections Commission stated on Tuesday that no official will instruct voters to cast their ballots for any candidate or in any specific manner during the upcoming local council, Women’s Development Committee elections and public referendum.
The elections are scheduled to be held on Saturday.
The statement was issued in response to claims circulated on social media alleging that the Commission’s actions may compromise the secrecy of the vote.
The Commission rejected the claims and stated that they are not based on facts. It also expressed concern over the spread of information that could affect public confidence in its work.
According to the Commission, voting procedures are designed to ensure that ballot secrecy is maintained.
It stated that officials appointed by the Commission are not permitted to guide voters towards any candidate or position.
The Commission also confirmed that each voter will be provided with three ballot papers to cast their votes.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have raised concerns regarding the Commission’s conduct in the election process.
They have alleged that actions taken by the Commission favour the ruling People’s National Congress and that concerns raised by the opposition have not been addressed.
The opposition has also claimed that the Commission’s handling of the candidacy process benefited the ruling party and that some opposition candidates were rejected during the process.
