Muaz Haleem has resigned from his position as Secretary General of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

In a statement on social media on Saturday, Muaz said his decision was made to support President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen the party’s governance.

He said the party’s activities should align with public expectations and that the role of Secretary General requires greater time commitment.

“I believe it is essential for the party to have an SG who can dedicate more time to the role than I currently can. Therefore, I have stepped down from the position of Secretary General of the People’s National Congress, effective today,” he said.

Muaz, who also serves as a Minister of State for Defence, was appointed to the post in January last year.

His resignation follows the resignation of ten cabinet ministers last week, who also stepped down citing support for the President’s reform agenda. New appointments have since been made to those positions.

The changes follow the outcome of the recent local council elections and a referendum held on April 4. Following the results, the President said reforms would be undertaken to address public concerns.
