Maldives no longer defined by political imprisonment, says president
The President said previous administrations had engaged in the imprisonment of political leaders, including former presidents.
President Mohamed Muizzu said Thursday that his administration has ended what he described as a history of political retribution and established political stability in the Maldives.
Speaking during a programme broadcast by Public Service Media, the President said previous administrations had engaged in the imprisonment of political leaders, including former presidents.
“Imprisoning political leaders, particularly former presidents, by any means necessary seemed to be a ‘hobby’ for previous administrations. This is not a principle I subscribe to,” President Muizzu said.
The President stated that political stability achieved under his administration means political figures no longer need to fear persecution or restrictions on political activity.
He added that all individuals, regardless of political status, remain subject to the Constitution and Islamic principles, and stressed that enforcing the law is a constitutional responsibility of the presidency.
The remarks come amid the formation of a joint political alliance involving former Presidents Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The three former leaders have stated that they are working together over concerns relating to freedom of expression, press freedom and governance.
Referring indirectly to the alliance, President Muizzu said political actors who identify themselves as defenders of democracy should assess whether their actions are consistent with democratic principles.
“It is questionable to attempt to change a democratically elected government through extra-democratic means, or to disrupt national stability and undermine political freedom while the administration is operating within democratic principles,” he said.
The President stated that freedom of expression remains protected, but said political activities must remain within the limits of the Constitution and Islamic principles.
He further stated that defamation, infringement of rights, and attempts to create unrest or weaken state institutions are unacceptable.
“I am not concerned by the rhetoric of political leaders, nor will I be distracted by it. I will fulfill my responsibilities without discrimination. Upholding the Constitution is my mandate,” President Muizzu said.
