Govt to pause sports activities during prayer times, says president
President Muizzu said discussions had included the possibility of suspending activities for around 20 minutes during prayer times.
President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce measures requiring sports activities at government-owned sports facilities to be paused during prayer times.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Monday, the President said work was underway to implement the policy and to establish prayer facilities at sports venues where such arrangements do not currently exist.
According to the President, it has become common for people to continue participating in sports activities during prayer times. He noted that some facilities, including Ekuveni Sports Complex and Maafannu Stadium, do not currently provide suitable spaces for people to perform prayers.
As a result, discussions have been held to introduce arrangements allowing sports activities to be temporarily halted when prayer times begin, enabling participants to perform prayers at the venue.
The President said the initiative had reached the implementation stage.
He added that future government sports facilities would also be designed to include dedicated prayer areas.
Among the measures being considered are:
-
Establishing facilities for players and visitors to perform prayers during sporting activities.
-
Introducing a requirement for sports activities to be paused for a specified period from the time of the Adhan, allowing participants time to pray.
President Muizzu said discussions had included the possibility of suspending activities for around 20 minutes during prayer times.
The measures are expected to be introduced in the coming days.
The President said the objective is to ensure that people using government sports facilities are able to perform prayers without having to leave the venue or miss prayer times while taking part in sporting activities.
