Five people were injured in a fire at an apartment in Hulhumalé Flat 110 during the early hours of Thursday, with one person sustaining burns.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said it received a report of the fire at a ground-floor apartment at around 1:10 a.m.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by approximately 1:23 a.m.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), preliminary assessments indicate the fire may have originated from a tool used for melting materials, such as a glue gun or plastic welding device, located in the apartment's living room.

Seven Maldivians were in the apartment at the time of the incident. They included four adult men, one adult woman and two children.

The NDMA said:

  • Five people are receiving treatment at hospital.

  • One of the injured sustained burns to approximately 12 per cent of their arms and legs.

The authority said the apartment was extensively damaged and is no longer fit for occupation.

The NDMA is providing temporary accommodation and humanitarian assistance to the affected family.

The authority also arranged temporary accommodation for eight residents from two other apartments in the building after smoke damage made those units on the first and third floors uninhabitable.
