A man accused of escaping from a police station while under arrest has been remanded in custody until the conclusion of his trial.
The Criminal Court on Saturday ordered the continued detention of the 18-year-old Maldivian man.
According to information presented by police in court, the suspect left the police station after being taken into custody, despite being repeatedly instructed that he was not permitted to do so.
The court's remand order states that the man was being held under a court warrant as part of an ongoing investigation when he left the police station.
The order further states that he repeatedly ignored police instructions, obstructed police officers in the course of their duties and engaged in conduct inside the police station alongside a group of other individuals.
According to the remand order, CCTV footage submitted by police supports the allegations.
The court also noted that obstructing police duties and deliberately hindering law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties are serious offences.
The remand order does not specify the offence for which the man was initially taken into custody.
