President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office to address traffic congestion in the Greater Malé area.
The new government agency was created on Sunday under the powers granted to the President by Article 116(a) of the Constitution. It will operate under the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade.
According to the President's Office, the agency has been established to develop and implement measures to address increasing traffic congestion resulting from the growing number of vehicles in the Greater Malé region.
The office's responsibilities include coordinating transport programmes with relevant institutions, advising government agencies on transport policy, improving public transport services and developing parking and urban mobility solutions.
Its mandate includes:

Formulating and implementing programmes in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Advising state institutions on policies to address traffic congestion.

Improving public transport services in the Greater Malé region.

Developing parking facilities and other urban mobility measures.
The President's Office said the agency will operate under the guidance of a governing board.
