Government on Wednesday gave a new date for completion of Ameenee Magu, which has been handed over to the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

The streetscaping project, which was earlier scheduled to be completed this month, will be completed in September, according to Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam.

Male Streetscaping Project to develop Ameenee Magu:

  • Handed over for MVR 84.4 million

  • On July 3, the planning ministry handed over the task to the RDC to complete the process within 210 days

  • On September 12, RDC closed the area of near Dharubaaruge intersecting with Ameenee Magu and started work on the project

Replying to a question raised by Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef regarding the project in the parliament session, Aslam said the construction of the road could not be completed as per the earlier schedule as it was difficult to get some materials for the construction.

Aslam said the deadline for completion of the project in the contract was changed due to the difficulties faced by the MWSC in procuring the pipes.

"Considering the difficulties, we have set a revised completion date for now. It will be on September 27, 2023," Aslam said.

The road is being constructed after removing the mature trees grown on both sides of the road. As there has been public criticism over the issue, Hassan Latheef asked the minister about it during the Wednesday sitting.

Replying to the question on whether the construction of roads in Male cannot be carried out without cutting down the huge trees that provide shade, Aslam said:

  • Trees on Ameenee Magu have to be removed as it is difficult to install the required piping network underground

  • When such trees grow older, they damage roadwork

"These include dewatering pipes, additional pipes for upgradation of MWSC's sanitation system, pipes for high voltage cables, and pipes that are still being used with other services," Aslam said.
