Planning Ministry said on Thursday that the government's project to develop Ameenee Magu may not be completed before the end of the presidential term on November 17.

Ameenee Magu work is now underway from Henveiru end to the junction of Izzuddin Road.

The last completed segment was opened during the first round of the presidential election on 9th last month. Since then, the work has stopped.

Minister of State for Planning Akram Kamaluddin told Atoll Times on Thursday that work on the unfinished remaining section of Ameenee Magu has not started because of a World Bank-assisted project to install a storm water pump in an area included in the section.

"The World Bank asked for very large pipes in the project. They have to be ordered from abroad," Akram said.

"The rest of the road will be completed before the end of this term."

An RDC spokesperson told Atoll Times on Thursday that the work was suspended after the Planning Ministry ordered the project to be temporarily suspended for the presidential election. He said the project would resume as soon as the ministry instructed him to continue.

RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik had earlier said that the entire work could be completed before last month if there were no further changes.

Under the development of Ameenee Magu:

  • The work was awarded for MVR 84.4 million

  • The Planning Ministry awarded the contract to the RDC on July 3 to complete the work within 210 days.
