Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to conduct an inspection to take action against those found violating norms in Hiyaa flats.

HDC said in a statement on Thursday that Hiyaa flats are one of the largest populated areas in a single spot. Therefore, HDC said that the corporation has laid down a number of rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the residents of the Hiyaa flats.

  • The rules laid down for finishing work

  • Tools that damage the structure of the building and such activities are banned

  • There are regulations for use of the building so that it doesn't bother others, e.g., fixing the ground floor of each tower as a commercial area to do business

While such rules and regulations have been put in place, HDC said many violations have been noticed in inspections carried out by the company from time to time.

"In some apartments, carpentry work, use of units for various businesses, large quantities of waste being dumped outside the apartments, changes in the structure so that the balcony is outside, and things like this have been identified in inspections," the HDC said.

The HDC has penalised and taken action against apartment units they have noticed such incidents in as per laid down rules and procedures.

"We are already conducting a special inspection in the Hiyaa flats. Appropriate measures will be taken as per rules and regulations based on the findings of the inspection," HDC said in a statement.

HDC aims to make Hulhumale an island that, according to the company, is an easy and safe place for people to live in. The HDC feels that people's cooperation is important to achieve this, which ofcourse it is. The government can provide housing, but it is the people that make it into homes.

Hiyaa flats were handed over to the allottees so that they could do finishing work on their own. During the course of the work, some have broken the threshold that was meant to install the washing machine on the balcony, in addition to the place where the sink was set up.

Since the damage caused by the change in the structure of the tower would lead to irreparable damage, the HDC had imposed a fine on those who demolished the structure in this manner that time as well.
