Maldives National Party (MNP) on Wednesday submitted a number of issues related to the development projects underway in Addu to the parliamentary government oversight committee.

The MNP submitted to the committee the complaints received from the people regarding the city's projects during the party's recent visit to Addu. These include:

  • Failure to fulfil the promises made by the government

  • Projects stuck or lack of clarity on how projects have been planned

  • Not many job opportunities available to the people

Highlighting the concerns of the people, the MNP in its letter to the committee raised the issues:

  • Shangri-La Resort has been closed for a long time and no work has been going on to reopen the resort

  • The government's promise to develop 8,000 tourist beds in Addu

  • The issue of delay in opening Dhoogas

  • Issues related to projects undertaken by India's Afcons

  • The issue of non-progress of land acquisition project

"The party has requested that the committee entrusted with the responsibility of the government should look into the issues and hold the government accountable so that these issues can be resolved and projects can be taken up," the letter said.

Some lawmakers from Addu constituency have also complained about the delay in the pace of work or disruption of the work. Planning minister Mohamed Aslam was also in Addu for a few days due to concerns of many residents regarding the road construction project, as mentioned in the MNP letter.
