All the towers in the Hiyaa flats have separate backup generators, but the generators are used to provide electricity to the public areas of the towers in a power cut, HDC said on Tuesday.
Many towers experienced power cuts at 5.30pm on Monday and the power returned at 9.30pm. The power cut lasted through out Iftar time, causing a lot of inconvenience to the residents of the Hiyaa flats and increased complaints.
According to STELCO, the power outage was caused due to shortening of the transformer which supplies electricity to Hiyaa Tower-1.
Out of the 16 towers in the area, power cuts occurred from the first to the eighth tower, which meant that half the Hiyaa population was in the dark without electricity on Monday evening.
A STELCO official had said on Monday that since power is being supplied to Hiyaa Towers 1 to 8 through a single cable, if power goes from one tower, all of the towers are affected.
An HDC spokesman told Atoll Times on Tuesday that there is already a separate backup generator for each tower.
The generators are being used, he said:
-
For emergency lights
-
For corridor lights
-
For fire safety equipment
-
For service lifts
There are backup generators, but on Monday even most people complained that it took hours to resolve the issue.
STELCO had said on Monday that it takes a lot of time to resolve such issues because of the way the network has been built and the large number of network issues in the area.
