K. Maafushi Council on Tuesday amended the regulations to increase the chances for the islanders in allotting land on the reclaimed land.

A total of 308 plots measuring 2,000 sqft each will be allotted from the reclaimed land in Maafushi. The Maafushi council has so far made two amendments to the policy.

As per the terms of the policy, every Maldivian citizen can apply for a plot.

However, in the latest amendment, the criteria for awarding points to applicants has been changed to allow more points for Maafushi residents.

Here's how points are awarded:

  • Native of Maafushi from birth - 25 points

  • If the applicant has left the previously settled island, registered in Maafushi and completed 10 years since - 20 points

  • If the applicant has left the previously settled island, registered in Maafushi and have not been living in the island for at least 10 years - 15 points

  • If the applicant is married to a Maafushi resident (wife/husband has been residing in Maafushi for more than five years) - 5 points

  • If the applicant is married to a Maafushi resident (wife/husband has been residing in Maafushi between one and five years) - 3 points

According to the notification, the application form will be issued online and at the Maafushi council counter by June 15. After filling up the application form, they can submit their applications along with the required documents to the Maafushi council office by June 15.

Maafushi has opened up a large number of plots and by-elections to the parliament's Guraidhoo constituency, which includes the island, will be held on April 14.

MDP has a majority in Maafushi council and is also contesting the by-election. However, in the last two terms, the seat was filled by Ibrahim Riza of the ruling party, who passed away in February due to cancer.
