Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday defended President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, saying that everything the president says he would do or try to do is not necessarily a pledge.

Nasheed defended President Solih while responding to Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir’s questions to planning minister Mohamed Aslam. Amir said that none of the president's pledges to Kudahuvadhoo constituency made during the presidential election have been fulfilled.

Nasheed said that a pledge would be written in the manifesto of the political party. He said that he did not believe something said in a speech could be taken as a presidential pledge even if the president said that he would do something in an island he is visiting.

"I hear a lot of MPs saying that the president promised this, that he pledged to do that on his various visits to these constituencies. I believe that we have to consider only those written in the manifesto as pledges," said Nasheed.

"I know that there have been times in the past that the parties have said the presidential pledges are printed on the banners used for elections by the printing staff, by mistake."

During previous parliamentary sittings, MPs have complained that the president had not fulfilled his pledges to their constituencies. The issue had heated up during a parliamentary session with the planning minister Aslam before.

Speaking at a function held on 25 May, Aslam said the pledges were made with the intention of fulfilling them. However, he did add that the pledges are often made without proper consultation, research and this lengthens and complicates implementation further.
