A large number of dead fish have washed up on the shores of Hankede in the southernmost Addu atoll, where land has been reclaimed in the shallows between Maradhoo to Gaukendi, for the construction of a bridge to develop Hankede as a resort.

The contractor of the project, India's Afcons Infrastructure, is constructing the bridge off the coast of Hankede as part of the road construction project in Addu. The bridge will be constructed from Maradhoo to Gaukendi and will be built upon pillars on the land reclaimed site.

More than one person who spoke to Atoll Times from Addu said that many of the life in the sea have died due to the lack of water flowing in the area after the land had been reclaimed for the construction of the bridge. They said that due to this, dead and rotting fish are washing up on the beach.

"The sea in the entire area is full of rotting fish and they are washing up on the shores. The rotting waste smell reaches all the way to the city. But there is no one to look into it," said an islander.

They added:

  • Oil residue can also be seen in the sea

  • In addition to the fish, the coral reefs in the area, including Hankede, have also been damaged

  • The Hankhede coast has also been affected
