Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of Naeema Moosa, who was found murdered inside her own house in N. Manadhoo in April.

Police commissioner Mohamed Hameed confirmed the arrested in a tweet on Friday and said the police were conducting raids at a place where there was "vital evidence" in the case.

A reliable source told Atoll Times that that the two men aged between 20 and 25 years belonged to a group in the island known to abuse drugs.

It is learnt that one of them was arrested about three days ago and has since confessed to the murder. The police are now conducting raids at the premises identified by the suspect as containing evidence, the source said.

Naeema Moosa, 62, was found murdered at her home, Annaarumaage in the island of Manadhoo, where she lived and had her registration, on April 7.

  • Several places on her body were stabbed with a sharp object; there were signs that her throat had been slit by a sharp object as well

  • A team from the serious and organised crime department of the police travelled to Manadhoo to investigate the case

  • After a police forensic pathologist concluded that there was no need for a post-mortem, Naeema was buried in the island the next day
