Male City Council on Wednesday decided to charge a fee from expatriates entering Lonuziyaaraiy Park and Sultan Park.
The decision to levy a fee on foreigners entering the two parks from June 15 was taken at a meeting of the council held on Wednesday.
The issue was brought to the meeting by Male mayor Dr Mohamed Muizz. He said charging a fee from migrant workers entering parks is a practice in other countries as well.
"I don't think it's discrimination. It's a normal practice," the opposition PPM vice president said.
Almost all councillors who spoke at the meeting backed the mayor's presence.
Speaking at the meeting, Galolhu West Councillor Mariyam Nazima Mohamed proposed:
-
to charge different fees for migrant workers and tourists
-
it was unanimously agreed to levy the fee as per Nazima's proposal
Muizz said the it will come into effect after two weeks, on June 15.
Muizz also said that the fee to be charged will be decided later and the administrative arrangements will be made and brought to the council meeting.
Earlier, a fee was charged from foreigners at Sultan Park. However, after Covid restrictions were lifted, the then council reopened it without charging a fee.
