Judicial Service Commission (JSC) president Hisaan Hussain said on Saturday that women are now running the judiciary in Maldives.
Hisaan made the remarks while addressing the MDP women's wing manifesto workshop held at Dharumavantha School on Saturday.
Hisaan said that when the MDP government took over in 2018, there were only 10 female judges in the country, including the magistrate courts. With so few women among the more than 200 judges working in the judiciary, the government's task was to increase the number of trained and experienced women judges, she said.
“Today I am proud to say that women are leading the entire judiciary,” said Hisaan, who also represents Thulhaadhoo constituency in the parliament.
Hisaan said:
-
In 2018, there were no female judges in either the High Court or the Supreme Court; before 2018, there was only one female judge in the High Court, but she later resigned
-
In the Supreme Court and High Court combined, the percentage of female judges is 42%; this is a reasonable increase
-
The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), which is responsible for the administrative arrangements of all courts across the country, is headed by a woman
-
The head of the Judicial Academy, which trains judges, is also a woman today.
Statistics show that, since 2018, the number of women judges in the courts have increased. They include:
-
2018 - 10
-
2019 - 12
-
2020 - 16
-
2021 - 20
-
2022 - 23

2023 - 26
