Court rejects EC's review request on MRM dissolution stay

The MRM alleges that EC'decision was taken under the influence of some parties.

Civil Court on Thursday ruled that the interim inunction issued against the Elections Commission (EC) to stay the dissolution of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) does not warrant a review.

After the Civil Court issued an order on May 28 to stay the implementation of the EC's decision to dissolve the MRM, the commission had filed a petition in the Civil Court seeking review of the order.

The Civil Court issued a ruling on Thursday saying that the interim order cannot be reviewed on the following grounds:

  • The EC has not been able to explain that the MRM has not disclosed any fact that would prevent the issuance of the stay order

  • The court cannot find any reason not to issue an order on the motion filed by the MRM based on the motion filed by the party and the accompanying documents they submitted.

The EC cannot take action against the MRM as the Civil Court has not reviewed the interim order.

  • Until the court rules otherwise, the EC's decision to dissolve the MRM will not be implemented

The Elections Commission decided to dissolve the party on May 24 for not meeting the 3,000 members required by the law. The commission has also asked the party not to conduct any political activities.

However, the party does not accept the decision. The MRM alleges that the decision was taken under the influence of some parties.

In the civil suit, the MRM requested:

  • To order the stay of implementation of the EC's decision until the court issues a judgment in its case
